The Wedding at Cana

Dennis McCallum
John 2:1-11

The first of John's seven recorded signs that confirm Jesus' identity and ministry takes place at a wedding in Cana. Here, Jesus transforms water intended for external washing into wine for internal consumption. Through this miracle, Jesus is expressing a critique of formalism, or focusing on the external. Jesus' purpose was not to fix the external, but to deal with the internal issues of a person's heart. People often want to relate to God with rules and regulations as opposed to a real authentic relationship that He offers through Jesus.

The Lord's Prayer

Ryan Lowery
Matthew 6:5-8

Prayer is meant to be a personal communication with God, not meant to impress people. The template that Jesus lays out for prayer is to address it in terms of one's relationship with God, declare what is true about God, and then present requests to God. Jesus also teaches two important principles: 1) perseverance in prayer is important; and 2) prayer is good for us.

Glory

Lee Campbell
John 17:1-24

The Father glorifies Jesus by making him king; Jesus glorifies God by giving eternal life. Self-glory blinds us to God's glory, ruins relationships, and steals glory from God. God's glory results in an eternal relationship with God and an eternal relationship with others.

Career Choices and God's Will

Jeff Gordon
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

It is very easy for believers to fall into overvaluing or undervaluing work. Scripture reveals to us that all parts of our life can bring glory to God, including our career. You must start with orienting your mind around the biblical perspective that your whole life can be a spiritual service of worship. Once you have been grounded in this principle choosing a career and working hard will fall into place. Like Jesus communicated to his followers, you must seek first his kingdom and all things will be added to you. \r\n

Why the Waste?

Scott Risley
Matthew 26:1-16

The story of Mary pouring out her expensive perfume on Jesus to anoint him before his burial is still being told for almost two thousand years, just as Jesus predicted. The Lesson we can learn from this is nothing that we pour out on Jesus is a waste. Most people won't understand, but Jesus sees it differently. "Have our eyes been opened to see the preciousness of the One whom we are serving?...that nothing less than the dearest, the costliest, the most precious, is fit for Him?"

Drawing Near to God

Gary DeLashmutt
Psalms 84:1-12

Some people might try to tell you that drawing near to God is an escape from real life, but the truth is drawing near to God is what enables us to face real life. There's a desire in our heart to worship something and when we are absent from God's presence we try to fill that desire with ourselves. When we come before God, we must start by accepting His appointed sacrifice which is Jesus on the cross, who made it possible for us to have a relationship with God. We must praise God for who He is, not simply thanking Him for what He has done recently.

Amazed by God

Jim Leffel
Psalms 139:1-24

The psalmist explores God's awe-inspiring knowledge, presence, and creativity. He is amazed to discover that he is fully known and yet accepted completely, that God is always present wherever he goes and that God reveals his beautiful creativity in nature and uniquely in human beings. We will look at three responses to these incredible truths: to delight in God's thoughts, to have a sensitized conscience, and to be totally open before God.

Psalm of Praise to the Lord of All

Jim Leffel
Psalms 145:1-21

This psalm focuses on God's amazing character and is instrumental in cultivating a vibrant relationship with God. It unpacks God's grace to all people, God's authority over all things now and forever, and God's power that sustains us in a broken world. As we praise God in prayer, we will experience intimacy with Him and deep joy in our soul.

Adoration and Liberation

Adam Spitznagle
Psalms 27:1-14

Our adoration of God is hindered by the focus of our own hearts. When we are distracted by our pride, our cynicism, or our fears of this world, we are creating barriers that keep us from seeing who God is and living a life of adoration towards Him. As we learn to adore God for who He is, we will be continually freed to pray through life with clarified emotional and relational freedom.
